How about a day in the life of a software engineer? - Author: Huyen Tue Dao - Tags: Episode Does Niki spend most of her time in the jungle with a cute hat and a whip? Or is she actually excavating herself out from a pile of grant applications? Does Huyen live in a hoodie and a dark room, illuminated by the green glow of her computer? Or is it really more meetings and getting people to write down what they're going to do as much as coding? On this episode we talk more about what our jobs really are, what we like, what we like less, and what we think the future may be for future research scientists and software engineers. In the future of this research scientist and software engineer? Perhaps a coffee date with a sparkly vampire named Elijah in Vienna? --- # YouTube --- # Show Notes **▶ A Day in the Life of a Research Scientist** [00:17:09](https://youtu.be/%5FqhQitgKMKo?t=1029&ref=technicaltea.show) Garden hermit [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garden\_hermit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garden%5Fhermit?ref=technicaltea.show) [00:21:20](https://youtu.be/%5FqhQitgKMKo?t=1280&ref=technicaltea.show) Figure 6: Tau-containing neurons in human Alzheimer's disease, human CTE, and muskox brain "Evidence of traumatic brain injury in headbutting bovids" by Ackermans, N.L., Varghese, M., Williams, T.M. et al., Acta Neuropathologica, 2022 | Springer [https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00401-022-02427-2#Fig6](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00401-022-02427-2?ref=technicaltea.show#Fig6) [00:26:42](https://youtu.be/%5FqhQitgKMKo?t=1602&ref=technicaltea.show) The Salmon Cannon and the Levitating Frog: And Other Serious Discoveries of Silly Science by Carly Anne York [https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/carly-anne-york/the-salmon-cannon-and-the-levitating-frog/9781541605213/](https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/carly-anne-york/the-salmon-cannon-and-the-levitating-frog/9781541605213/?ref=technicaltea.show) [00:27:11](https://youtu.be/%5FqhQitgKMKo?t=1631&ref=technicaltea.show) New Law of Urination: Mammals Take 20 Seconds to Pee | National Geographic [https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/mammals-pee-20-seconds-biology-urination](https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/mammals-pee-20-seconds-biology-urination?ref=technicaltea.show) **▶ A Day in the Life of a Software Engineer** [00:34:47](https://youtu.be/%5FqhQitgKMKo?t=2087&ref=technicaltea.show) Software engineering | Wikipedia [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software\_engineering](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software%5Fengineering?ref=technicaltea.show) [00:41:48](https://youtu.be/%5FqhQitgKMKo?t=2508&ref=technicaltea.show) Human-Computer Interaction Lab (HCIL) | University of Maryland [https://hcil.umd.edu/](https://hcil.umd.edu/?ref=technicaltea.show) [00:47:27](https://youtu.be/%5FqhQitgKMKo?t=2847&ref=technicaltea.show) Separation of concerns | Wikipedia [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Separation\_of\_concerns](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Separation%5Fof%5Fconcerns?ref=technicaltea.show) [00:52:38](https://youtu.be/%5FqhQitgKMKo?t=3158&ref=technicaltea.show) The Mythical Man-Month | Wikipedia [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The\_Mythical\_Man-Month](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The%5FMythical%5FMan-Month?ref=technicaltea.show) [00:55:28](https://youtu.be/%5FqhQitgKMKo?t=3328&ref=technicaltea.show) What is GDPR, the EU's new data protection law? | GDPR.eu [https://gdpr.eu/what-is-gdpr/](https://gdpr.eu/what-is-gdpr/?ref=technicaltea.show) [01:01:17](https://youtu.be/%5FqhQitgKMKo?t=3677&ref=technicaltea.show) 5 mobile app features to help you work on the go | Trello Blog, Atlassian [https://www.atlassian.com/blog/trello/5-mobile-app-features](https://www.atlassian.com/blog/trello/5-mobile-app-features?ref=technicaltea.show) **▶ This Month's \*Sparkle\*** [01:24:04](https://youtu.be/%5FqhQitgKMKo?t=5044&ref=technicaltea.show) Self Care Vampire - Mobile romance game trailer | YouTube [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joiSkuTOoq0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joiSkuTOoq0&ref=technicaltea.show)
